Road Trip 2017: The Great Southwest Adventure

We recently got back from our great southwest adventure. We had a wonderful time. Road tripping is probably my favorite type of vacation. I love the freedom you have with your schedule, getting to go wherever you want, stop when you need to, play the music you want to listen to, etc.

Road trip through New Mexico and TexasThis year we traveled through part of the southwest of the United States…well, a small part but we covered a lot of miles. We visited Santa Fe, NM; Los Alamos, NM; Albuquerque, NM; Alamogordo, NM; Roswell, NM; Carlsbad Caverns, NM; Fort Davis, TX; Marfa, TX; and Alpine, TX.

As science and science fiction nerds, much of our activities centered around space, with some radiation history and science and geology and spelunking thrown in.

One of my favorite hobbies is to plan vacations. As a schedule and spreadsheet nerd, I plan thing out almost down to the minute, the mile, and the dollar. I am very rigid in my planning but if plans change, I don’t sweat it. I roll with the changes and enjoy my trip. Then I know the plan and where we can pick things back up. This is a characteristic I have been very thankful to have on many vacations and this one was no different.

Road trip through New Mexico and TexasAs you may remember, a few weeks ago, I posted an article discussing bringing food with you on your road trip. We did this in order to save money and prevent us from eating less healthy options. We still ate out but we chose places we really wanted to eat at and didn’t worry too much about the price since we were saving money by eating one or two meals from our picnic supplies.

Over the next few posts, I’m going to share our adventure with you. Stay tuned. I will talk about what we did and where we ate. I will have recommendations, tips, and advice for planning your own road trip and specifically for a road trip through New Mexico and west Texas.

Check out each day of our trip:

Have you been on a road trip yet this year? If not, do you have plans for a road trip later in the year?

  • We live in Maine, but six summers ago, we hit the road and headed west. About 2/3 of the way through our trip, we loved our days in the great southwest! So different from what we are used to, but breathtaking!

    • Wow! That is quite a drive. 🙂 It is like going to a different planet in a lot of ways. A very unexpectedly beautiful part of the country. 🙂

  • I’ve never been on a true roadtrip, but I’ve always wanted to take one! I love the idea of just stopping at places that look interesting!

I can’t believe you didn’t mention El Paso! Thank you for sharing at What’d You Do This Weekend? Hope to see you back next week!

    Wishes for tasty dishes,

    • We actually didn’t make it to El Paso. We do plan on visiting that city on a future road trip. 🙂

  • A road trip sounds fun especially to parts of the US I’ve never been. The southwest is pretty far from me here in upstate SC. Looks like you had a great time!

Blessings to you! I’m a few “doors” down from you at #FreshMarketFriday! 🙂
